"I Will Protect My Rights Myself"... Andong Welfare Center Launches Human Rights Education for Individuals with Developmental Disabilities
From Addressing Abuse and Discrimination to Self-Determination
Empowering Advocacy for Rights
The Andong Comprehensive Welfare Center for the Disabled is conducting disability rights education for local individuals with developmental disabilities, aiming to strengthen their understanding of rights and their capacity for self-determination.
The Andong Comprehensive Welfare Center for the Disabled (Director Cheon Jinsook), operated by the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism Social Welfare Foundation, announced on April 16 that it will provide disability rights education to 25 local individuals with developmental disabilities.
This education program is designed to help people with disabilities correctly understand the concept of human rights and to recognize and advocate for their own rights. The curriculum will cover cases of abuse and discrimination that may occur in daily life, procedures for protecting rights and advocacy, and methods for responding to situations involving violations of rights.
The lecture will be led by Lim Donghoon, Director of the Korea Institute for Social Welfare and Human Rights. Director Lim plans to explain the meaning of rights and the importance of the right to self-determination in an accessible way, focusing on various real-life cases that people with disabilities may encounter.
The welfare center expects that this education will go beyond the simple delivery of information, serving as an opportunity for individuals with developmental disabilities to build the capacity to make choices and protect their own lives. In particular, the program is meaningful in that it aims to empower participants not to remain passive in the face of rights violations, but to express their intentions and request appropriate assistance as needed.
A representative from the center said, "We hope that through this education, local individuals with developmental disabilities will gain a deeper understanding of themselves and grow as agents of their own lives based on their right to self-determination. We will continue striving to be a welfare center that works together with the community in a culture of mutual respect and consideration for everyone's rights."

The level of welfare for people with disabilities depends not only on the provision of services, but also on how well individuals are supported in exercising their rights autonomously. In this regard, this education program is expected to serve as a practical starting point for advancing the independence and rights of people with disabilities in the community, as well as for spreading a human rights-friendly community culture.
