President Lee Approves Appointment of Ko Kwangheon as BMCRC Chairperson
President Lee Jaemyung approved the appointment of Ko Gwangheon as the inaugural chairperson of the Broadcasting, Media, and Communications Review Commission (BMCRC) on April 14, according to Kang Yujeong, Chief Presidential Spokesperson.
Chairperson Ko is a journalist who previously served as CEO of The Hankyoreh and Seoul Shinmun, as well as President of the Korea Digital News Association. Nominated by President Lee, he was appointed as a standing commissioner and began his term on December 29, 2025. He was then elected as chairperson candidate at the BMCRC general meeting on March 12, 2026. Chairperson Ko's term will run until December 28, 2028.

The chairperson of the BMCRC’s predecessor, the Korea Communications Standards Commission, held a civilian status, but under the BMCRC the role has been changed to a political appointee. Accordingly, the National Assembly’s Science, ICT, Broadcasting and Communications Committee held a confirmation hearing for Chairperson Ko on April 1, 2026, and adopted the confirmation hearing report on April 14, 2026.
