Bekasi is a satellite city located east of Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia. With a population of 2.6 million, Bekasi is a key industrial city that is rapidly growing around large-scale industrial complexes and a strong manufacturing base. Various industries such as automotive, electronics, and logistics are concentrated there, and it is regarded as a major hub for Indonesia's economic growth.
Since signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the sports councils of Seongnam and Bekasi in 2022, the two cities have built a close friendship in the field of sports. Building on this trust, the new sister city agreement significantly expands the scope of cooperation to cover all areas of urban administration, including economic and trade relations, intelligent transportation systems, tourism and cultural promotion, and environmental infrastructure.
In particular, both cities play central roles in the economies and industries of their respective countries, as they are located near the capitals of Korea and Indonesia. Seongnam’s advanced smart city infrastructure and Bekasi’s dynamic growth potential are expected to create strong synergy between the two cities.
Bekasi Mayor Tri Adhianto stated, “It is an honor to establish a sister city relationship with Seongnam, the center of Korea’s Fourth Industrial Revolution. By benchmarking Seongnam’s advanced technologies and policy cases, we will use this as an opportunity for Bekasi to take another leap forward.”
Seongnam Mayor Shin Sangjin said, “I am delighted to partner with Bekasi, a city with unlimited growth potential. I hope this agreement becomes a living model of cooperation that goes beyond simple exchanges and delivers tangible benefits to citizens of both cities across all fields, including the economy, transportation, and environment.”
