Kori Unit 2 Resumes Operation... "Expectations to Ease Energy Supply Instability"
35 Months of Facility Upgrades and Safety Reviews Completed
Continued Operation Planned for Subsequent Units, Including Kori Units 3 and 4
The Kori Unit 2 nuclear power plant has entered continued operation after approximately three years of facility upgrades and safety reviews.
Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) announced on April 4 that Kori Unit 2 has resumed operations following a 35-month facility improvement project and inspections by regulatory authorities.
Kori Unit 2 began commercial operation in August 1983. Its 40-year operating license expired in April 2023, at which point the unit was shut down. Subsequently, KHNP submitted a continued operation safety evaluation report in April 2022 and, after a review process lasting about three years and seven months, received approval for continued operation in November last year.
During the shutdown period, reinforcement work was carried out to improve equipment performance and enhance safety. The plant's safety for continued operation was ultimately verified through periodic inspections by regulatory bodies.
KHNP expects that the restart of Kori Unit 2 will help address concerns over energy supply instability while also contributing to achieving carbon neutrality.
KHNP President Hoi Chul Kim stated, "Amid ongoing uncertainties in energy supply, continued operation of nuclear power plants based on safety is a vital means of ensuring national energy security. Starting with Kori Unit 2, we will thoroughly prepare for the continued operation of nine nuclear units currently underway to contribute to a stable power supply."
