Gwangju Buk-gu Launches Comprehensive Survey of Illegal Occupation Facilities in Rivers and Valleys
Task Force Formed Led by Deputy District Mayor
Strong Administrative Enforcement for Non-Compliance
Gwangju Buk-gu has launched a comprehensive investigation and maintenance campaign to eradicate illegal occupation facilities that have proliferated around rivers and valleys.
According to Buk-gu on March 26th, this investigation was initiated to address residents’ inconveniences and the risk of safety accidents caused by unauthorized facilities occupying national and local rivers, small streams, forest valleys, and ditches.
To this end, Buk-gu has established a dedicated task force led by the Deputy District Mayor, which includes extensive participation from relevant departments such as the River Disaster Prevention Division, the Parks and Green Spaces Division, the Construction Division, and the Market and Industry Division. The first round of a comprehensive survey will be conducted by the end of this month, followed by a second survey in June. From July to September, a focused crackdown period will be operated to ensure ongoing maintenance.
The main targets of the crackdown include illegal business activities within rivers and valleys, as well as unauthorized installations such as platforms, tents, decks, temporary buildings, and unlicensed structures.
For facilities identified during on-site inspections, voluntary removal will be encouraged first. If this is not implemented, orders for restoration to original condition will be issued. In addition, strong follow-up measures such as fines, legal action, and administrative execution involving forced removal will be taken.
Furthermore, the district plans to improve public awareness through its website, community newsletters, and banners, and will actively encourage public interest reports through the Safety Report Center to preemptively block illegal occupation.
