Gyeonggi Province Continues 'Military Service Injury Insurance' This Year... Expected to Benefit 60,000 Youths
Gyeonggi Province will continue its "Military Service Injury Insurance for Gyeonggi Youth" program this year to protect young people from accidents that may occur during their military service.
The Military Service Injury Insurance for Gyeonggi Youth is a system in which Gyeonggi Province offers free accident insurance coverage to reduce the burden of accident-related damages for young people fulfilling their national defense obligations.
The program covers active-duty soldiers, full-time reservists, conscripted police officers, conscripted firefighters, and maritime police officers who are registered residents of Gyeonggi Province. Career military personnel and social service agents are excluded. Eligible individuals are automatically enrolled upon enlistment without the need for a separate application.
The insurance covers incidents such as death, injury, illness, and accidents that occur during military service. It applies not only during basic training but also to accidents that occur while on leave or during outings.
The maximum coverage amount is 50 million won each for accidental death or disability and for death or disability due to illness. Surgery expenses are covered up to 200,000 won, and hospitalization is covered with a daily allowance of 40,000 won for up to 180 days. An additional 20 million won is paid for accidental death or disability resulting from explosions, fires, collapses, or disasters. Insurance payouts are provided separately from military medical expenses or personal insurance policies.

Kim Seonhwa, Director of the Youth Opportunity Division of Gyeonggi Province, stated, "Accidents that occur during military service place a great burden on both individuals and their families," and added, "We will continue to strengthen the safety net so that young people can serve with peace of mind."
Since the program was launched in 2018, a total of 12,000 insurance payouts amounting to 12 billion won have been made to 11,274 individuals as of December last year. In a satisfaction survey conducted in the second half of the year, 88% of respondents expressed satisfaction with the program, 97% supported its continuation, and 95% agreed with expanding it nationwide.
