Lee Sunhyung, the late former Chairman of Inje Academy, who was a leading figure in Korean parasitology and a prominent educational administrator devoted to the advancement of medicine throughout his life, passed away on March 21. He was 90.
After graduating from Seoul National University College of Medicine in 1962, Lee Sunhyung earned both his master's and doctoral degrees at the same institution, beginning his path as a medical scientist. He went on to serve as a professor at Chung-Ang University and Seoul National University College of Medicine, nurturing countless medical talents and making especially remarkable achievements in the field of parasitology.
He was credited with elevating Korean parasitology to a global level, as evidenced by his discovery and first academic report of human infection cases of the newly identified parasite "Parvatrema duboisi" and the first reported case of "Metagonimus seoulensis" parasitizing humans from wild rats.
His legacy as an educator and academic administrator is also significant. From 1994 to 1998, he served as Dean of Seoul National University College of Medicine, strengthening basic medical education, and continued his research as a member of the National Academy of Sciences, Republic of Korea, even after being named Professor Emeritus in 2002.
He dedicated himself to the development of Korean medicine by serving in various key leadership roles, including President of the Korean Society for Parasitology, Chair of the Council of Basic Medical Science, Chairman of the Accreditation Board for Medical Schools in Korea, and Executive Vice President of the National Academy of Science and Technology.

In the public health sector, he contributed to the promotion of national health as the 20th president of the Korea Association of Health Promotion and, from 2017 until January 2025, served as Chairman of Inje Academy, dedicating his final years to the advancement of medicine and education.
