Police Drop Charges Against Kim Eo-jun Over 'Defamation of Prime Minister' Complaint
Accused of Defamation and Obstruction of Work
Prime Minister Kim Minseok Submitted a Statement of Non-Punishment
Kim Eo-jun, a broadcaster who was reported to the authorities for allegedly defaming Prime Minister Kim Minseok with remarks suggesting public anxiety due to the absence of a cabinet meeting in response to the Middle East situation, has been cleared of the charges.
The Seodaemun Police Station in Seoul announced on the 19th that Kim, who was under investigation on charges of defamation under the Information and Communications Network Act and obstruction of work by fraudulent means, has recently been cleared with a decision of "no right of prosecution."
Kim was reported by the civil group Judicial Justice Citizens' Action for stating on his YouTube show "Kim Eo-jun's Humility Is Hard News Factory" that "there is no cabinet meeting" and "there is anxiety because there is no countermeasures meeting." The civic group claimed that Kim's statements amounted to spreading false information.
The Prime Minister's Office rebutted Kim's remarks, stating that meetings with relevant ministers had been held daily since the Middle East situation began. However, on the 9th, Prime Minister Kim posted on social networking services (SNS) that "it was not intentional, and even if there is an issue, I do not wish for punishment." On the same day, Prime Minister Kim also submitted a statement of non-punishment to the police.
