GS Caltex Launches 'Kkus' Carbon Reduction Education Campaign... "Lowering Barriers to Advanced Technology"
Introducing the Hands-On ‘CCUS KIT’:
A Creative Educational Tool Reimagining CCUS Technology
On March 19, GS Caltex announced the launch of the ‘CCU~S (Kkus) Campaign,’ a carbon reduction education campaign aimed at future generations. This campaign was designed to lower the psychological barriers young people may have toward new low-carbon businesses.
The company also released the educational creative tool, the ‘CCUS KIT.’ This kit reinterprets the technology of carbon dioxide capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS)—a carbon reduction initiative—in a way that is accessible to children.
The kit uses the familiar and humorous concept of flatulence as a metaphor for carbon in the atmosphere, turning the process of capturing gas and using it as nutrients to grow plants into a playful activity. Through this, children can naturally learn about the principles of a circular economy, such as collecting carbon to recycle it into valuable materials or safely storing it.
GS Caltex is increasing public engagement with the campaign by linking online and offline communication channels. Some applicants will be selected by lottery to receive the CCUS KIT, allowing the public to experience the creative kit firsthand. In addition, the company plans to collaborate with the science content creator Gwedo to explain the scientific principles of CCUS in an easy-to-understand manner.
Field-based communication is also being pursued in parallel. Starting on March 18, GS Caltex, together with the Yeosu Industrial Complex Joint Development Council, conducted an educational program over two days at seven elementary schools in Yeosu, Jeollanam-do, reaching approximately 500 students.
GS Caltex has been expanding new low-carbon businesses such as CCUS, waste plastic recycling, carbon-free steam and renewable energy, and biofuels. In particular, to develop the CCUS business, the company began by signing a CCS business agreement with major corporations in 2022, and since 2024, has formed a consultative body with major companies in the Yeosu Industrial Complex. In partnership with local governments, GS Caltex is also promoting public-private cooperation to establish the ‘Yeosu CCUS Cluster.’
