Active-Duty Police Officer Indicted for Accepting 140 Million Won for Favorable Treatment During Investigation

Additional 45 Million Won in Bribes Uncovered Through Supplementary Investigation

An active-duty police officer who provided special treatment to a suspect and accepted money while investigating a fraud case has been brought to trial.

The Tax Crime Investigation Division of the Seoul Northern District Prosecutors' Office (headed by Chief Prosecutor Han Ji-hyuk) announced on the 16th that it had indicted a 57-year-old active-duty police officer, referred to as Mr. A, without detention, on charges of bribery under the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Crimes and violation of the Attorney-at-Law Act. Mr. B, an 86-year-old who provided money to Mr. A, was also indicted without detention on charges of offering a bribe.

According to the prosecution, Mr. A was indicted on charges of granting a settlement period and obtaining a withdrawal of the complaint at the request of the accused, Mr. B, while investigating a 'court auction investment' fraud case in January 2018, and then forwarding the case with a non-prosecution opinion in exchange for money.

From April 2018 to May 2021, Mr. A is alleged to have received a total of about 140 million won from Mr. B's business operated under the name of 'court auction investment,' with the money delivered as profits on hundreds of occasions. Through supplementary investigation, prosecutors discovered an additional 45 million won in bribes received by Mr. A, bringing the total amount to a higher figure.

Mr. A is also accused of having prepared legal documents, such as a criminal complaint for an acquaintance, without being licensed as an attorney in July of last year, and receiving money in return.
