Busan City to Push Forward with "Bujeon Station Integrated Transfer Center" Project, Aiming to Begin Construction in 2030
Beyond Transfer: Integrating Transportation, Commerce, Culture, and Convention Functions
"Fostering Balanced National Development and a Global Maritime Hub"
The city of Busan is moving forward in earnest with the construction of the "Bujeon Station Integrated Transfer Center," a core facility for establishing a global maritime metropolitan transportation network.
According to Busan City on March 11, the city secured the necessary budget for the project last year and began a research service in February to expedite progress. On this day, an official kick-off briefing will also be held to share the project's direction with relevant agencies.
This research service aims to establish the optimal transfer system and transportation facility layout by forecasting demand and analyzing project benefits. The comprehensive plan will also review best practices from Korea and abroad, and include approaches for development, renovation of the aging station, and urban regeneration strategies for surrounding areas.
The research service is scheduled for completion by February next year. Busan City plans to finish selecting private sector partners and finalizing detailed plans by 2029, with the goal of commencing construction of the Integrated Transfer Center in 2030.
Busan City intends to develop Bujeon Station not merely as a transfer facility, but as a multi-purpose urban hub that integrates transportation, commerce, culture, and convention functions. The city expects this will contribute to balanced national development and enhance urban competitiveness.
Following the opening of the Jungang Line and Donghae Line, as well as the planned introduction of the Gyeongjeon Line and the Busan-type express railway BuTX, demand for Bujeon Station is rising. In addition, the deployment of KTX-Eum to the Donghae Line and increased services on the Jungang Line at the beginning of this year have improved metropolitan transportation accessibility, further solidifying Bujeon Station's role as a key transportation hub in the southeastern region.
Bujeon Station is located near the Seomyeon city center, Busan Citizens Park, and traditional markets, and is also connected to the urban subway, making it well-positioned as a multi-functional urban hub. Through this project, Busan City plans to connect the previously disconnected areas of Citizens Park, Seomyeon, and the Bujeon Station business district via pedestrian walkways, thereby boosting the local economy.
Furthermore, Busan City aims to incorporate the Integrated Transfer Center project into national plans such as the "5th Metropolitan Area Transportation Implementation Plan" to secure the foundation for implementation. Currently, the Metropolitan Transport Commission and the Korea Transport Institute are reviewing the project's economic viability and feasibility.
Busan City plans to work with Busanjin-gu and local community organizations to confirm and officially announce the plan within the first half of this year.
