Magnitude 3.0 Earthquake off Yeonggwang Coast... Nuclear Safety Commission: "No Safety Issues at Nuclear Power Plants"
The Nuclear Safety and Security Commission announced on March 7, 2026, that it has confirmed there are no safety issues at any nuclear reactor facilities in South Korea following the magnitude 3.0 earthquake that occurred at 10:06 a.m. off the northwest coast of Yeonggwang, South Jeolla Province, 66 kilometers from shore.
The closest nuclear facility to the epicenter is the Hanhbit Nuclear Power Plant, located approximately 54 kilometers away. The earthquake measurement at this site was recorded at 0.0030g.
The Commission explained that this figure is significantly lower than the seismic design standard of 0.2g for nuclear power plants, confirming that there is no impact on facility safety.

The Commission also conducted an emergency on-site inspection of the Hanhbit Nuclear Power Plant through the Hanhbit Regional Office at 10:34 a.m. on the same day and reported that, as of now, no abnormalities have been identified.
