A Flagship Crossover Blending French Flair with Korean Technology

The legendary model 'Etoile Filante,' which set a land speed record by breaking 300 km/h on the Bonneville Salt Flats in the United States in 1956, has made its return. Renault's new flagship crossover, the 'FILANTE,' which inherits that spirit of innovation and heritage, is now launching in the Korean market. I had the opportunity to test-drive the new Filante for a little over an hour.
Upon first encountering the Filante, its unique silhouette that combines the strengths of both sedans and SUVs immediately draws attention. With a length of 4,915 mm, a width of 1,890 mm, and a height of 1,635 mm, the body is lower and wider than before, resulting in a more dynamic profile. The front features a three-dimensional illuminated 'lozenge' logo harmonized with a glossy black grille, creating a sense of depth and presence.
The side profile is defined by a solid roofline and large 19-inch or 20-inch wheels, highlighting the premium crossover identity, while the rear adds sophistication with an aerodynamic design that omits the wiper and introduces a 'floating rear spoiler.'
The interior offers outstanding space, thanks to a generous 2,820 mm wheelbase. One of the core features of the Filante is the trio of 12.3-inch 'openR panoramic screens' that extend across to the passenger seat. Leveraging 5G data, the system supports music, OTT, YouTube, and even gaming functions, transforming the vehicle into an entertainment space.
Notably, SK Telecom's AI assistant 'A.Dot Auto' is integrated, enabling natural voice-controlled vehicle operations and route recommendations. Additionally, a ChatGPT-based 'Tips' feature provides a conversational vehicle manual, enhancing convenience.
The driving performance has also evolved. The hybrid E-Tech system combines a 1.5L turbo direct-injection engine with dual motors, delivering a maximum system output of 250 horsepower. With a large 1.64 kWh battery, the Filante can drive up to 75% in electric mode in urban areas, and the combined fuel efficiency reaches 15.1 km/L.
'Frequency Sensitive Dampers (SFD),' which adjust road vibration in real time during driving, and 'Active Noise Cancellation (ANC)'—standard across all trims—provide the comfort and quietness expected of a flagship model. The development team explained that, recognizing the vulnerability of glass roofs to noise, they increased the thickness and strength of the glass. ANC functionality has also been enhanced through tuning, and double-laminated glass is used for the second row, further improving sound insulation.
Safety features have also been strengthened. The Filante is equipped with advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), including: Emergency Steering Assist (ESA), Lane Departure Prevention and Lane Centering Assist, 360-degree 3D Around View, and Full Auto Parking Assist. In particular, the 'Smart Rearview Mirror' provides a clear digital view of the rear, supporting safer driving. However, during daytime driving, there was some light glare on the Smart Rearview Mirror. The vehicle I test-drove did not have window tinting, so this issue may be improved upon future purchase with proper tinting.

The price of the Renault Filante, after eco-friendly tax benefits, is as follows: Techno - 43,319,000 won; Iconic - 46,969,000 won; Esprit Alpine - 49,719,000 won; and Esprit Alpine 1955 - 52,189,000 won. For buyers, Renault Korea has also prepared the 'R:assure' premium care solution, which includes free replacement of consumables within three years or 45,000 km of driving, among other benefits.
