Approximately 100 people attended the event, including Shin Ikhyun, CEO of LIG Nex1, representatives from the Defense Acquisition Program Administration, the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the Navy, the Agency for Defense Development, the Defense Agency for Technology and Quality, the Defense Rapid Acquisition Technology Research Institute, the Defense Technology Promotion Research Institute, as well as officials from Gyeongsangbuk-do Province, Gumi City, and other local governments.
The Fleet Air Defense Guided Missile-II is an anti-aircraft guided weapon to be installed on the Korean next-generation destroyer (KDDX). It is being developed to defend allied naval vessels against aerial threats such as enemy aircraft and cruise missiles, thereby enhancing the survivability of the ships.
The completion of this assembly and inspection facility comes about two years after LIG Nex1 signed a system development project contract for the Fleet Air Defense Guided Missile-II with the Defense Acquisition Program Administration in 2024. The company has established dedicated facilities optimized for the development of cutting-edge weapons systems, consolidating its accumulated research and development capabilities, and plans to accelerate the development of high-quality fleet air defense guided weapons by 2030.
This project is particularly significant as it is the first in the industry to be led by a company for the development of an anti-aircraft guided weapon system. Upon successful completion, LIG Nex1 is expected to further strengthen its technological competitiveness in the guided weapon sector and expand its research and development capabilities for next-generation guided weapons.
Additionally, the Fleet Air Defense Guided Missile-II is being developed with a target localization rate of 90%, and is expected to contribute to expanding exports and revitalizing the defense industry ecosystem in the future.
