Gwangju Buk-gu's 'Bukkeumoney' 8 Billion Won Completely Sold Out in 2 Days Thanks to 15% Discount
Fastest Record Among Gwangju Autonomous Districts
Bukkeumoney, the local currency of Buk-gu, Gwangju, worth 8 billion won, was completely sold out just two days after its issuance, thanks to an unprecedented 15% upfront discount and enhanced purchasing convenience, signaling a positive outlook for the revitalization of local small businesses.
According to Buk-gu, Gwangju on March 4, all 8 billion won of Bukkeumoney, which began issuance on March 3 to invigorate the local economy, was fully sold out by around 10 a.m. on this day.
Compared to last year, when it took six days to sell out, this year’s record was achieved four days faster. This is especially meaningful as it marks the fastest sales among all local currencies in Gwangju’s autonomous districts for the second consecutive year. On the first day of issuance alone, 6.24 billion won—accounting for 78.4% of the total—was sold in a single day, and the remainder sold out immediately the following morning.
The main secret behind this rapid sellout is undoubtedly the '15% upfront discount.' Offering a far higher discount rate than the Onnuri Gift Certificate (7% discount) or the Gwangju Sangsaeng Card (10% discount) triggered explosive real demand from local residents.
Additionally, the number of Bukkeumoney purchase locations was drastically increased from 18 Gwangju Bank branches in Buk-gu to 67 locations across Gwangju, making card issuance much easier and accelerating the sellout. Moreover, with over 20,000 affiliated stores—including restaurants, supermarkets, and private academies—centered around everyday essential businesses, residents could use Bukkeumoney almost anywhere within their daily sphere, which was another significant advantage.
On the first day of sales, March 3, long lines of citizens eager to receive Bukkeumoney formed early in the morning at the Buk-gu Office plaza, and even the numbered tickets distributed to those waiting ran out quickly, creating a remarkable scene.
To ensure that the 8 billion won worth of Bukkeumoney issued this time is rapidly injected into local businesses, Buk-gu is running a 'Bukkeumoney Use Certification Event at Good Price Stores' until the end of this month.
If customers pay with Bukkeumoney at a Good Price Store and submit their receipts, they can receive up to 300,000 won in additional Bukkeumoney based on their usage record. The list of Good Price Stores is available on the Buk-gu Office website, and detailed information about the event will be provided through Buk-gu’s official social media channels.
