Daejeon City Begins Construction of Access Road to 'Yuseong Metropolitan Transfer Center' in Chronic Congestion Area
Construction Begins in Early March
Relieving Chronic Congestion (10 km/h) Around Guamgyo Intersection and Guam Station Intersection
Daejeon City will begin construction of the "Yuseong Metropolitan Transfer Center Access Road Project" in early March, connecting Hyeonchungwon-ro and Yuseong IC, which are notorious for chronic traffic congestion during commuting hours, with the areas around Guamgyo Intersection and Guam Station Intersection. The project is scheduled for completion in May.
This project is one of the short-term measures under the phased strategy to improve the structure of habitual congestion sections in northwestern Daejeon. It will directly link the section from Jangdae Intersection to Baksan-ro and the road in front of Da Gaon Youth Housing in Guam-dong, as part of the planned arterial Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) connection road between Oesam and Yuseong Complex Terminal.
The Hyeonchungwon-ro·Yuseong IC to Guamgyo Intersection·Guam Station Intersection section is a representative congestion area, with average travel speeds of only around 10 km/h during commuting hours.
Accordingly, as a preemptive measure to alleviate bottlenecks that are expected to persist until the scheduled completion of the full BRT connection road in 2030, an interim road will be established in advance.
During the project implementation, the need to use part of the land owned by Korea Expressway Corporation posed a challenge. However, Daejeon City successfully reached an agreement on land use through continued negotiations. The city completed the agreement and usage approval procedures in February, and is aiming for early completion in May following the start of construction in March.
Once the road is completed, it is expected that more than 20% of the traffic volume in the Guam Intersection area will be dispersed, and average travel speeds will improve by approximately 30%.
In particular, small vehicles will be directed to use the newly constructed road, while medium and large vehicles will be guided along the existing route toward Guamgyo Intersection. After completion, Daejeon City plans to thoroughly analyze the vehicle dispersion effect and then allow BRT buses (B2, B4) to enter via Guamgyo Intersection, thereby enabling transfers at Yuseong Complex Terminal between intercity buses, urban rail, and other modes of transportation.

Nam Sideok, Director of Daejeon City's Transportation Bureau, stated, "This project is one of the key initiatives we have devoted significant effort to in order to substantially improve the traffic environment of the northwestern area. Once we complete the construction of the BRT connection road, the Honam Branch underground roadway, and the grade separation project at Guam Intersection by 2030, the northwestern Daejeon transportation system will be dramatically improved."
