From Braised Meatballs to Sundae Soup... A Look at Yoon Sukyeol's Meal Plan as a Life Prisoner
First breakfast is "kimchi soup," lunch is "sundae soup"
Former President Yoon Sukyeol, who was sentenced to life imprisonment on charges of being the ringleader in the 12·3 Martial Law Incident, will continue to be detained at Seoul Detention Center for the time being. Amid this, the detention center meal plan for the former president has been released, drawing public interest.
Yoon Returns to Detention Center... First Dinner Is Mixed Grain Rice and Seaweed Soup
According to Seoul Detention Center on February 20, former President Yoon returned to the same facility where he had previously been held immediately after sentencing and spent his first night there as a prisoner serving a life sentence. Until the sentence is finalized, he will continue to live under the same conditions as a detainee awaiting a final verdict.
For his first dinner, former President Yoon was served perilla seaweed soup, braised vegetable meatballs, mixed grain rice, and napa cabbage kimchi. It has been reported that he received the same meal as other detainees. On February 20, breakfast will consist of fish cake kimchi soup, pickled stem lettuce, and young radish kimchi. For lunch, pork sundae soup, pickled onions, steamed sweet potatoes, and napa cabbage kimchi will be served. Dinner will include beef hangover soup, warm tofu with sauce, and stir-fried kimchi in perilla oil.
Meals at the detention center are distributed all at once at set times, and detainees eat in their respective wards. It is standard practice for detainees to wash their own dishes after meals.
Six Remaining Trials... Possibility of Staying at Seoul Detention Center
The previous day, the 25th Criminal Division of Seoul Central District Court (Presiding Judge Ji Guyun) found former President Yoon guilty of being the ringleader of the insurrection in the sentencing hearing and imposed a life sentence.
Typically, detainees awaiting a final verdict are held in a detention center, but once their sentence is finalized and their status changes to a convicted prisoner, they are transferred to a regular prison. If the appeal process drags on at the Supreme Court stage after the second trial, detainees may be moved to a nearby prison due to issues such as overcrowding. However, in the case of former President Yoon, he is likely to remain at Seoul Detention Center even after his sentence is finalized, as he still faces several ongoing trials.
