Mayor Lee Jangwoo: "Bomunsan Project to Be Developed as a Public Project Led by Daejeon Urban Corporation"
215.2-Meter Observatory Tower with Spaceship Design, Cable Car, Monorail, and Eco-Friendly Electric Buses
Target Completion in 2031
Lee Jangwoo, Mayor of Daejeon, said, "We will push ahead with the Bomunsan Project as a public development in order to swiftly overcome the difficulties in attracting private capital due to the deterioration of financial markets and the slump in the construction industry, and we will reinvigorate the original downtown by linking the observatory tower with eco-friendly transportation."
At a press conference held in the briefing room of City Hall on the morning of the 13th, Mayor Lee added, "We will establish a public development system centered on Daejeon Urban Corporation to secure strong execution power for the project."
Daejeon City will switch from its original plan of attracting private investment to a method that combines the use of municipal finances with Daejeon Urban Corporation's own projects.
This is interpreted as reflecting the city's determination to enhance connectivity with O-World and to complete the project through swift decision-making. In particular, the city plans to reduce operating costs by utilizing the O-World staff and organization of the urban corporation, and to improve the project's profitability by raising funds at low interest rates through the issuance of corporate bonds.
The Bomunsan Project largely consists of the observatory tower construction project, the installation of eco-friendly transportation (cable car, monorail, eco-friendly electric buses), and the O-World recreation project, which passed a feasibility review by the Local Public Enterprise Evaluation Institute in December last year.
The observatory tower will be built to a height of 215.2 meters near the Manghyang Tower in Daesa-dong, and will serve as a key hub facility overlooking the entire city of Daejeon. A media facade will be installed on a design shaped like a spaceship launch to enhance Daejeon's symbolism as a science city.
The eco-friendly transportation will diversify modes of travel and significantly improve access across all of Bomunsan by connecting a cable car between O-World and Sirubong (2.4 km), a monorail between Sirubong and the observatory tower (1.3 km), and eco-friendly electric buses between the observatory tower and the baseball stadium (3.0 km).
In response to concerns about environmental damage, the city plans to adhere to eco-friendly development principles by prioritizing already damaged areas or existing facility sites over areas with healthy vegetation, and by immediately restoring any damage that occurs during construction. The city also plans to attract local companies and "Kkumssi Family" content to the observatory tower to promote stay-type tourism and consumption.
The observatory tower has already completed investment review and design tender procedures and is now in the detailed design phase, while eco-friendly transportation such as the cable car is awaiting feasibility review. The city aims to complete all projects by 2031, reclaim Bomunsan's "lost 20 years," and inject new vitality into the original downtown area.
