Controversy Grows Over Using AI to Track Internal Leakers
U.S. artificial intelligence (AI) company OpenAI has been engulfed in internal conflict and security controversy over the introduction of an adult sexual-content generation feature. The firing of the executive who oversaw safety policy was followed by revelations that the company was using its own AI models to identify internal leakers, further escalating the fallout.
On February 12, Yonhap News, citing the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) and other outlets, reported that OpenAI fired Vice President Ryan Beiermeister, who led the product policy team, in early January. The company cited gender discrimination against a male colleague as the reason for his dismissal, but former Vice President Beiermeister countered that this allegation was not true.

In particular, he reportedly raised internal concerns that safeguards to block adult content for teenage users were not functioning adequately, and that the system to block child sexual exploitation content also needed improvement. In response, OpenAI stated, "Vice President Beiermeister made valuable contributions to the company, and his departure is unrelated to the issues he raised while employed here."
Previously, in October 2025, OpenAI Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Sam Altman said the company was considering allowing adult users to access sexual content within certain limits. Responding to criticism at the time, he commented, "We are not the elected morality police," adding, "It is also important to treat adults as adults."
This controversy also intersects with the broader debate across the AI industry over the "scope of permissible adult content." Grok, the AI chatbot developed by xAI, a company founded by Elon Musk, has likewise been embroiled in controversy over adult-content generation due to its relatively relaxed content policies. Some users view this as an expansion of freedom of expression, while others are increasingly emphasizing the protection of minors and the responsibility of platforms.
Meanwhile, IT-focused outlet The Information reported that OpenAI is using a special version of ChatGPT to identify internal leakers. When an article about internal company activities appears in external media, security staff feed the article into the AI model and compare it against internal documents, the Slack workplace messenger, email, and other sources.

However, it has not been confirmed whether any leakers have actually been caught through this method. As the rapid advancement of AI technology brings freedom of expression, user protection, and corporate ethics into conflict, attention is focusing on how OpenAI's latest decisions will influence future global debates on AI regulation.
