HJ Heavy Industries To Build First 10,100 TEU Container Ships... Wins 353.2 Billion Won Order for Two Vessels from Europe
Opening a New Chapter with a 300 m Dock at Yeongdo Shipyard
Advanced Design and Construction Technology Leads to Repeat Orders from Shipowners
HJ Heavy Industries will build a large 10,000 TEU-class container ship for the first time at its Busan Yeongdo Shipyard.
HJ Heavy Industries announced on the 11th that it has signed a shipbuilding contract with a European shipowner for two eco-friendly 10,100 TEU-class container ships worth a total of 353.2 billion won. In addition, a separate option contract for two more vessels of the same type is included.
The vessels ordered this time are eco-friendly container ships that apply the latest hull form and high-efficiency fuel-saving design. To respond to the environmental regulations of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), they will be equipped with desulfurization equipment (scrubbers), and a high-efficiency hull design that enables optimal operation will be applied to minimize greenhouse gas emissions.
This will be the first time that a large container ship exceeding 10,000 TEU is built at Busan Yeongdo Shipyard, the main shipbuilding site of HJ Heavy Industries. This effectively elevates the 90-year-old Yeongdo Shipyard's capability in building medium- to large-sized container ships to a higher level.
HJ Heavy Industries is also known as a shipyard that has overcome physical limitations through technology. In 2004, in order to overcome the restriction of dock length, it surprised the industry by developing the "DAM method" and building an 8,000 TEU-class container ship. This method involved installing a cofferdam structure and then welding and connecting the hull sections underwater.
Subsequently, through continuous technological development, it became possible to build large vessels even without the DAM method. Last year, the company successfully built and delivered a 9,000 TEU-class methanol container ship, and this time it has secured an order from a European shipowner for a 10,000 TEU-class container ship. It is also noteworthy that this order is a re-order placed by a shipowner who had recently ordered a container ship and was satisfied with its quality.
In recent years, HJ Heavy Industries has focused on developing mid-sized eco-friendly container ships and has accumulated competitiveness in this field. From the 5,500 TEU-class container ship that served as the signal for resuming merchant vessel orders in 2021 to HMM's 9,000 TEU-class methanol container ship, all have been built with hull forms optimized for the dock at Yeongdo Shipyard.
