The newly opened road is a four-lane, two-way route with a length of 1.2 km and a width of 18 m, serving as a key transportation corridor that directly connects the Maewol Distribution Complex, the Pungam IC, and the Hyocheon District.
Citizens who had previously been forced to detour around the Gwangju Kimchi Town are expected to see their travel time significantly reduced with the opening of this road. In particular, it is anticipated to greatly help ease traffic congestion during commuting hours and on homebound and return journeys during holiday seasons.
The Maewol~Hyocheon Road was constructed by Korea Land & Housing Corporation (LH) starting in 2017 and has been completed in about 10 years, with Seo-gu to be responsible for its future maintenance. On the 9th, ahead of the opening, Seo-gu District Mayor Kim visited the site to inspect road safety facilities and the traffic environment, thoroughly checking preparations to ensure safe use by citizens.
In particular, Seo-gu has established a year-round safe road management system for this section, including the installation of a brine spraying device to prepare for snowfall and road icing in winter.
