Wonju City Nears Wonju Prison Relocation... Plans to Develop Musildong Prison Site Underway
The relocation project for Wonju Prison is scheduled to be completed in the second half of this year. The Ministry of Justice has been carrying out a new prison construction project by investing a total of 157.6 billion won to relocate Wonju Prison from Musildong to Bongsandong, building a facility with a capacity of 1,100 inmates on a 200,000-square-meter site in Bongsandong.
Completed in 1979, Musildong Wonju Prison has been criticized for being located in the city center, detracting from the urban landscape and hindering downtown development. In response, the Ministry of Justice decided to relocate the prison in 2014 and began the new construction project in earnest. The construction of the new Bongsandong prison has now been completed, and after finishing the interior facilities, the project is expected to be finalized in the second half of the year.
Since the Musildong prison site was designated as a leading national property urban development project site in 2019, Wonju City, the Ministry of Economy and Finance, and Korea Land and Housing Corporation (LH) have been reviewing development plans through consultations. If the related administrative procedures proceed smoothly, construction is expected to begin in 2030.
Meanwhile, the Dongbu District Sports Complex, a village support project being promoted in conjunction with the prison relocation, is nearing completion of land compensation, and the project is expected to move forward in earnest in 2026.
