Icheon to Launch Province's First 'Liability Insurance for People with Developmental Disabilities' Next Year
Automatic Enrollment for Eligible Individuals
Up to 100 Million Won Coverage Per Accident
Icheon City in Gyeonggi Province will become the first city or county in the province to implement a liability insurance system for people with developmental disabilities starting in January next year.
This insurance is designed to provide coverage in cases where a person with a developmental disability causes bodily injury or property damage to others during daily life or social activities.
The city explained that it decided to introduce the system to alleviate the psychological and economic burdens on families who may face compensation issues when a person with a developmental disability causes an unexpected accident due to impulsive behavior or other reasons.
The insurance covers all registered residents of Icheon City with intellectual or autistic disabilities. All eligible individuals will be automatically enrolled without any separate application process. Icheon City will contract directly with the insurance company and cover the full premium. The coverage period will run from January 1 to December 31 next year, and the city plans to renew the policy annually.
The coverage includes: ▲ liability for bodily injury or property damage caused by accidents during daily life (up to 100 million won per accident, with a 50,000 won deductible) ▲ compensation for permanent disability resulting from injury (up to 50 million won).
To claim insurance benefits, individuals must submit the relevant supporting documents directly to the insurance company in the event of an accident. For more information, inquiries can be made to the insurance company's call center or the Senior and Disabled Persons Division at Icheon City Hall.
