Man in His Twenties Sentenced to Prison for Concealing HIV Status and Having Unprotected Sex: "Victim Pleads for Severe Punishment"
Sentenced to Eight Months in Prison
A man in his twenties has been sentenced to prison for having sexual intercourse without a condom while concealing his HIV-positive status.
On December 18, the Gwangju District Court’s Criminal Division 5 (Presiding Judge Ji Hyesun) sentenced Mr. A (29), who was indicted for violating the Act on the Prevention of Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome, to eight months in prison.
Mr. A was indicted for having sexual intercourse with Ms. B on July 31 of last year without informing her of his HIV infection and without using any preventive measures such as condoms.
Ms. B contracted another sexually transmitted disease as a result of this incident. During the process of tracing the route of infection, it was discovered that Mr. A was HIV-positive.
The court stated, "The victim expressed severe psychological shock and fear, and pleaded for a heavy sentence," adding, "The defendant did not provide any compensation, citing financial difficulties."
