Uijeongbu Station Selected for Commission's Integrated Transfer Center Consulting... Green Light for Station Area Development
Uijeongbu Station Poised to Become Northern Gyeonggi's Key Transfer Hub
Uijeongbu City in Gyeonggi Province (Mayor Kim Donggeun) announced on December 11 that it has been selected for the "Consulting Support Project for Innovative Integrated Transfer Center Models," a public contest promoted by the Metropolitan Transport Commission (hereinafter referred to as the Commission) and the Korea Research Institute for Human Settlements (hereinafter referred to as the Institute).
This contest was conducted nationwide by the Commission and the Institute to establish a standard model for integrated transfer centers and to support such projects. Following a document review and presentation evaluation, four regions, including Uijeongbu Station, were selected.
Uijeongbu Station serves as a key transportation hub in Uijeongbu City, where railways and both metropolitan and local buses converge. The planned establishment of an integrated transfer center is expected to significantly improve the transportation environment, enhancing convenience by shortening transfer routes and strengthening public transportation accessibility-improvements that will be directly felt by citizens.
The integrated transfer center will be developed in connection with the Uijeongbu Station area development project and will include commercial and office facilities. This is anticipated to revitalize the city center, increase foot traffic, and stimulate the local economy. Through this consulting project, the functions and utility of the station area are expected to be further enhanced.
To this end, the city plans to increase the completeness of the project by linking the "Basic Plan and Feasibility Study for the Metropolitan Integrated Transfer Center," currently being promoted by Uijeongbu Urban Corporation, with this consulting support project.
In particular, the area around the eastern side of Uijeongbu Station, including the Station Square Neighborhood Park, was designated as a candidate site for the "Spatial Innovation Leading Project" by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport on July 3, 2024. The city is currently pursuing the designation of this area as an Urban Innovation Zone through the establishment of a spatial restructuring plan, and is actively moving forward with urban planning for the development of the Uijeongbu Station area centered on this key region.
Going forward, the city and Uijeongbu Urban Corporation plan to further develop the project concept based on the expert consulting provided by the Commission and the Institute, and will work closely with relevant organizations to ensure smooth implementation of the project.
In addition, the city will actively work to ensure that this project is reflected in the "4th Basic Plan for Transfer Centers and Integrated Transfer Centers" and the "5th Metropolitan Transportation Implementation Plan."
