Founded in 1218, the University of Salamanca is one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in Europe, highly regarded especially in the fields of humanities and linguistics. The university officially launched its Department of Korean Studies in 2015, awarding bachelor's degrees in the field. To strengthen the foundation for Korean studies research, the National Library of Korea provided $15,000 for the establishment of the Korean Resource Room and donated 1,461 books and materials related to Korea. The library also plans to continue supplying new materials in the future.
The Korean Resource Room houses a wide range of materials in fields such as Korean literature, history, and Korean language education. It is expected to serve not only as a space for Korean studies classes and research, but also as an open area where local students can experience Korean culture.
The opening ceremony was attended by Heeseop Kim, Director of the National Library of Korea; Raoul Sanchez Prieto, Vice President for International Exchange at the University of Salamanca; Alvaro Trigo, Professor of Korean Studies; and Hyuncheol Jang, Minister at the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Spain.
Director Heeseop Kim stated, "It is very meaningful that the Korean Resource Room has opened at the University of Salamanca, which has a long academic tradition," and added, "I hope this will serve as an opportunity to broaden academic exchange and cultural understanding between the two countries."
