High-Level Preparatory Meeting to Be Held in Chile in 2027
Main Conference Scheduled in South Korea
South Korea has been confirmed as the host of the next United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC) in 2028.
On December 9 (local time), the United Nations General Assembly held a plenary session at the UN Headquarters in New York, where it put to a vote a resolution to hold the next UN Ocean Conference in South Korea. The resolution was adopted with 169 votes in favor and 2 against (the United States and Argentina). No countries abstained.
The adopted resolution stipulates that the United Nations Ocean Conference, which aims to implement and support the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 14 (SDG 14) on the conservation and sustainable use of the oceans, will be held in South Korea in June 2028. In addition, Chile was selected as a co-host for the upcoming conference alongside South Korea. Chile is scheduled to host a high-level preparatory event in 2027 ahead of the main conference in South Korea.
The United Nations Ocean Conference is the largest and highest-level international meeting in the field of ocean affairs, held every three years. Traditionally, it is co-hosted by a developed country and an emerging country. This year, the third conference was jointly hosted by France and Costa Rica.
