Icheon City Completes Improvement Project for Leaking Water Transmission Pipeline
New 1.8-Kilometer Pipeline Installed to Bypass Section with Repeated Leaks
On December 8, the city of Icheon in Gyeonggi Province announced that it has completed the improvement project for the water transmission pipeline, which transports raw water from the upstream section of the Gangcheonbo Weir on the Namhan River to the Icheon Water Purification Plant, in order to resolve the issue of leaks.
The Icheon city's water transmission pipeline, which is a total of 24 kilometers long, is a key facility that transports raw water sourced from the upstream section of the Gangcheonbo Weir on the Namhan River to the Icheon Water Purification Plant, where it is treated and then supplied to citizens.
This project involved installing a new 1.8-kilometer pipeline that bypasses the old section of the transmission pipeline along the former national highway in Sejongdaewang-myeon, where leaks had repeatedly occurred, rerouting it to an area near National Route 42.
The city explained that by installing the new bypass pipeline and diverting the water flow, it has fundamentally resolved the risk of leaks. A city official stated, "The old transmission pipeline was an aging section where leaks occurred even during construction," adding, "With this improvement project, the stability of the water supply system is expected to greatly improve."
The city also plans to gradually repair and manage the remaining sections of the existing pipeline to ensure that citizens continue to receive clean and stable tap water.

In addition, the city plans to respond to urban growth and establish a stable water supply system by promoting projects such as the dualization of the transmission pipeline, improvements to the water intake facility, the construction of emergency connections between regional and local water supply systems, and the expansion of the water purification plant.
