DPK on Choo Kyungho’s Indictment: “Special Prosecutor Has Confirmed Serious Criminal Charges”

The Democratic Party of Korea has stated that the news of the indictment of Choo Kyungho, a lawmaker from the People Power Party, by the special prosecutor’s team constitutes confirmation of serious criminal charges.

On December 7, Moon Daerim, spokesperson for the Democratic Party, said in a written briefing regarding the indictment of Representative Choo and others by the special prosecutor Cho Eunsuk’s team, which is investigating the 12·3 Martial Law-related insurrection and treason allegations, “The court must deliver a strict ruling that aligns with the public’s common sense, based on evidence and legal principles,” adding, “The special prosecutor has confirmed that Representative Choo’s actions constitute serious criminal charges that threaten the constitutional order.”

He went on to say, “The essence of the issue goes beyond dereliction of duty or inappropriate political conduct. It lies in the suspension of the National Assembly’s functions, which is the representative institution of the people and the last bastion of democracy, and in the disruption of the constitutional order of power. Such actions can never be tolerated in a democratic nation.”

He also criticized the court’s decision on December 3 to dismiss the special prosecutor’s request for an arrest warrant for Representative Choo, saying, “Applying strict standards to ordinary citizens while repeatedly showing leniency only to high-ranking officials severely undermines public trust in the judiciary.”

Moon emphasized, “Now, it is time for the court to act. The Democratic Party strongly urges the special prosecutor to do everything possible to maintain the charges and calls on the court to deliver a judgment that meets the expectations of the people.”
