Gwangyang Yudang Park Recommended as a Serene and Historic Winter Travel Destination
A Tranquil Winter Retreat Amid Centuries-Old Trees
Yudang Park Offers a Space for Contemplation and Self-Reflection
Experience the Beauty of Emptiness and Stillness in Gwangyang
Gwangyang City in South Jeolla Province has recommended Yudang Park as a special winter travel destination, where visitors can enjoy tranquil contemplation amid the reflective atmosphere conveyed by bare trees that have silently witnessed 500 years of history.
Upon entering the cozy Yudang Park, visitors are greeted by gentle sunlight filtering through the deep growth rings and gnarled branches of aged trees such as the Chinese fringetree, weeping willow, and hackberry.
The bare trees, having shed all their leaves, fully embrace the winter light, embodying nature's philosophy of accepting even transience and imperfection as intrinsic parts of life.
Yudang Park was originally established in 1547 by Park Sehu, then magistrate of Gwangyang, as a "Buanrim·Biborim"-a protective forest designed to reinforce the land's energy and shield the town from sea winds, reflecting the traditional wisdom of the era.
It is also a historic site that has borne witness to the turbulence and upheaval of Korea's modern history, including the execution of Donghak Peasant Revolution leader Kim Inbae, the Yeosu-Suncheon Incident, and the Korean War.
The ancient trees of Gwangyang-eup, which have withstood countless storms and rain, are recognized for their beautiful forms, military strategic value, and function as windbreaks, and have been designated and protected as natural monuments for their historical and cultural significance.
The serene winter atmosphere of Yudang Park, where it feels as if all haste has been set aside, demonstrates how time lingers within the peaceful transformation of nature through the seasons.
On the rustling leaf-strewn paths, in the long shadows cast by sunlight between the bare branches, and within the silence broken only by the sound of the wind, visitors naturally experience the power of emptiness, space, and contemplation.
Lee Hyunju, Head of the Tourism Division, stated, "Yudang Park is a place that reminds modern people, weary from their crowded routines, of the beauty of open space," adding, "We recommend experiencing the winter at Yudang Park to those who wish to spend time in self-reflection, feeling the resonance conveyed by the old under the winter sun."
