The Advanced Assistive Device Support Program for National Merit Recipients is a program that provides customized assistive devices to those who have been disabled due to injuries or accidents while serving the country, helping them reintegrate into society and achieve independence. This is a flagship social contribution initiative of the POSCO 1% Sharing Foundation, carried out in cooperation with the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs, and was launched in 2020 to mark the 70th anniversary of the Korean War. As of this year, the program has supported a total of 219 individuals with robotic prosthetic arms and legs, multifunctional wheelchairs, and AI-powered hearing aids.
During the ceremony, Lee Jiwoon, a national merit recipient who was paralyzed from the waist down in a military training accident in 1999, and Sergeant Kim Dokyeong, who lost part of his hand while repairing an armored vehicle, each received an advanced wheelchair and a robotic prosthetic arm, respectively. Lee Jiwoon said, "Being able to move more freely will greatly help me in my work as a disability awareness instructor and as a music composer." Sergeant Kim Dokyeong shared, "I will overcome my disability and continue to grow as an expert in the maintenance field."
