Development Planned Over Approximately 1.04 Million Square Meters in Yeoncheon County
Emerging as the Green Bio Hub of Northern Gyeonggi and the Capital Region
Establishing a Growth Base for the Green Bio Industry and Contributing to Balanced Regional Development
The "Northern Gyeonggi Green Bio Industry Promotion District," centered on Yeoncheon County in Gyeonggi Province, has been selected as the final winner in the competition for designation as a Green Bio Industry Promotion District, organized by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs. With this designation, Gyeonggi Province has secured the foundation to become a key hub leading the future of agriculture and the bio industry.
The green bio industry refers to a next-generation sector that is growing around six core areas: microorganisms, natural materials, food ingredients, insects, seeds, and veterinary pharmaceuticals.
In August, Gyeonggi Province established a plan to create the "Northern Gyeonggi Green Bio Industry Promotion District," with Yeoncheon County as its base, and participated in the competition. This was the first district selection since the enforcement of the "Act on the Promotion of the Green Bio Industry."
With the designation of this district, Gyeonggi Province will receive various policy incentives, including eligibility to participate in government infrastructure projects, additional points for business support programs, and special provisions for shared property.
The Northern Gyeonggi Green Bio Industry Promotion District is planned to be developed over an area of approximately 1.04 million square meters, covering Yeoncheon-eup, Sinseo-myeon, and Gunnam-myeon. Yeoncheon County is an optimal location for green bio research, as it possesses natural resources such as Job's tears, oat, and hemp, as well as a pristine environment near the DMZ. The promotion district plans to focus on these specialty crops of Yeoncheon County, establish a foundation for raw material standardization and mass production, and serve as an open innovation platform supporting business growth and startups.
To achieve this, the province plans to establish a foundation for standardizing and mass-producing raw materials from major specialty crops in northern Gyeonggi, and to support regulatory sandboxes and testbeds for regulatory reform and technology development.
Additionally, the province will develop a comprehensive plan for fostering the green bio industry, form a dedicated organization for the promotion district, and build a collaborative network among industry, academia, research, and government. In the initial phase, the foundation will be stabilized through administrative leadership, and in the mid- to long-term, an ecosystem will be created in which farmers and businesses can achieve sustainable and independent growth together.
