Mayor Kang Gijung Deliberates Appointment of Beommo Kim as Technopark Director Candidate
Mayor Expresses Thoughts at December 1 Press Meeting
"Reviewing the Report... Excessive Document Demands Must Be Addressed"
Kang Gijung, Mayor of Gwangju, is deliberating whether to appoint Beommo Kim, the candidate for Director of Gwangju Technopark, who was deemed 'unqualified' by the city council.
At a press meeting on December 1, Mayor Kang responded to a question about whether he would withdraw Kim's nomination by saying, "The personnel hearing report arrived today. I will read it and make a decision."
Previously, the Special Committee on Personnel Hearings of the city council adopted a progress report expressing an 'inappropriate and unqualified' opinion, citing that Kim had failed to submit financial transaction records for the past five years as well as documents related to the employment of his spouse and family members. Although Gwangju's personnel hearings are non-binding, all three previous candidates who were found 'unqualified' have voluntarily withdrawn, drawing attention to Kim's future course of action.
Even after the adoption of the report, Kim has not made any particular statement. As a result, Gwangju City now faces a choice between withdrawing the nomination or proceeding with the appointment.

Regarding the controversy over document submission, Mayor Kang stated, "Submitting five years of financial records is not an essential requirement for verification, so I consider it an excessive demand for personal information." He added, "Previous heads of affiliated organizations also found this very unpleasant, but it is understood that they submitted the documents due to the prevailing atmosphere." He continued, "Gwangju was the first in the country to fully implement the personnel hearing system and has conducted the most hearings for heads of organizations. I believe the system needs improvement," but did not clarify his position on the appointment.
