Military Recovers 25 Sets of Remains in Baengmagoji Korean War Battlefield Excavation
Fierce Battlefield on the Central Front During the Korean War
The Ministry of National Defense announced on December 1 that it had recovered the remains of 25 soldiers and 1,962 personal belongings of the fallen during an excavation conducted over approximately 40 days in the Baengmagoji area of Cheorwon County, Gangwon Province, starting from October 15. Baengmagoji was a major battlefield on the central front during the Korean War.
About 100 South Korean soldiers and service members from United Nations Command member states participated in the daily excavation efforts. On-site inspections suggest that most of the recovered remains are those of South Korean soldiers, but precise identification will be confirmed through detailed analysis and DNA testing.
