Chonnam National University Leads 20 Billion Won National Quantum Sensing Flagship Project
Professor Moon Geol of the Department of Physics Joins National Quantum Sensing Project
Chonnam National University announced on December 1 that Moon Geol, Professor of Physics, will participate in the "Quantum Science and Technology Flagship Project" supported by the Institute for Information & Communications Technology Planning & Evaluation (IITP), thereby taking a leading role in quantum sensing research, a key national strategic field.
This flagship project is led by the Korea Research Institute of Standards and Science (KRISS) and aims to develop atom-based quantum gyroscopes and accelerometer sensors for navigation. The project will be carried out with a total budget of 20 billion won until December 2032.
In addition to this project, Professor Moon is also serving as the principal investigator for several defense technology advancement projects supported by the Agency for Defense Development, including the Specialized Laboratory for Ultra-Precision Quantum Measurement Sensors (2023-2028) and the Defense Quantum Computing & Sensing Technology Research (2023-2029). He is actively conducting research on quantum magnetic field sensors and compact inertial sensor technology based on cooled atoms.
Furthermore, since 2023, Professor Moon has been participating in the K+Quantum Innovation Talent Development Center, led by KAIST, together with Professors Ko Ara, Shin Donggeun, Je Seunggeun, and Yoon Sunhyeon from the Department of Physics at Chonnam National University. They are leading the development of specialized quantum education programs for master's and doctoral students and operating multidisciplinary research collaboration programs to foster next-generation experts in the quantum field.
Chonnam National University has further solidified its status as a research-oriented university leading Quantum Science & Technology in the Gwangju and Jeonnam regions through participation in this project. In particular, by linking with the university's ongoing AI Glocalization Project, it has laid the foundation for building world-class research capabilities in preparation for the rapidly approaching era of Quantum AI (Quantum Artificial Intelligence).
