Gyeonggi Province Provides Transportation Support for Pregnant Women in Six Transportation-Vulnerable Areas... Up to 1 Million Won Per Person
Gyeonggi Province has supported over 3,000 pregnant women in the past six months through its "Transportation Cost Support Program for Pregnant Women in Childbirth-Vulnerable Areas," which was implemented for the first time this year in six cities and counties with limited transportation access.
According to Gyeonggi Province on November 24, the province launched the transportation cost support program for pregnant women in April, targeting six childbirth-vulnerable areas: Gapyeong County, Yeoncheon County, Pocheon City, Yangpyeong County, Yeoju City, and Anseong City. As of the end of October, six months after the program began, a total of 2,838 people had received transportation voucher support, surpassing the initial estimate of 2,400 recipients.
This program was established to address the situation in which pregnant women living in areas without childbirth-capable medical institutions postpone hospital visits or are unable to receive essential medical care on time due to the burden of long-distance travel. Its purpose is to ensure that pregnant women can reliably access prenatal and postnatal care, as well as childbirth-related medical services, throughout their pregnancy.
Expressions of gratitude from beneficiaries of the program have continued to pour in.
Ms. A, who is about to give birth, said, "It was difficult to drive when I had abdominal pain in the early morning hours, and the taxi surcharge was also a burden. Receiving transportation support from Gyeonggi Province after my medical appointment helped ease that burden," expressing her satisfaction with the policy.
Ms. B, who is also expecting, said, "I had to visit the hospital repeatedly for regular checkups, postpartum recovery assessments, and newborn vaccinations, but the long intervals between buses made transportation difficult. Thanks to the transportation support, I was able to use taxis without financial burden, which allowed me to receive the necessary medical care on time. It was a great help."
Gyeonggi Province explained that, given the significant travel burden for pregnant women in areas without childbirth medical institutions, this program functions as an important support system that goes beyond simple financial assistance, enabling timely access to essential medical services for pregnant women.
Yoo Youngcheol, Director of the Health and Wellness Bureau of Gyeonggi Province, stated, "The core of this program is to prevent delays in medical care or difficulties in emergency transportation due to the absence of childbirth medical institutions. Moving forward, we will continue to incorporate feedback from the field and further improve the policy so that pregnant women in childbirth-vulnerable areas can stably access the medical services they need."
Applications for the transportation cost support program for pregnant women in childbirth-vulnerable areas can be submitted online through Government24 (www.gov.kr) or in person at the local city or county public health center.
Eligibility is limited to pregnant women (including registered foreign nationals) who have been registered residents in a childbirth-vulnerable area for at least six months as of the application date. Applications can be submitted from the third month of pregnancy up to three months after childbirth.
