The Marine Corps Goyang Special City Veterans Association explained that the honorary marine appointment was awarded to Mayor Lee Donghwan in recognition of his efforts to actively communicate and support reserve organizations, as well as his contributions to community service and national veterans affairs.
Mayor Lee Donghwan stated, "It is a great honor to be appointed as an honorary marine," adding, "The unwavering spirit and dedication of the Marine Corps Veterans Association serve as a significant example for the safety and sense of community in Goyang.
