Jangsu County Offers Free Rental of Radon Detectors, a Group 1 Carcinogen
Service Available Until March Next Year
"Managing Indoor Air Quality During Winter"
Jangsu County in North Jeolla Province will operate a free radon detector rental service from November 17, 2025, to March 31, 2026, to help manage indoor air quality during the winter season.
According to the county on November 17, radon is a naturally occurring radioactive substance that exists as a colorless and odorless gas. It is classified as a Group 1 carcinogen that can cause lung cancer with prolonged exposure.
In particular, radon concentrations tend to rise during the winter due to reduced ventilation, making regular ventilation and indoor air quality checks more important than ever.
Since 2018, the county has been running the detector rental service with the goals of enabling self-checks of indoor air quality, creating a healthy environment during the winter, and promoting the widespread adoption of radon reduction practices.
All residents who are registered in Jangsu County can apply for the rental by bringing their ID to the nearest town or township office. The rental period is two days.
It is recommended to conduct measurements in poorly ventilated indoor or basement spaces, or areas with extensive use of finishing materials. If high radon levels are detected, regular ventilation is advised. For more information, contact the Environmental Division of Jangsu County.
