Busan Transportation Corporation Launches Campaign Urging Legislation for National Compensation of Urban Rail Free Fare Losses
Public Awareness Campaigns Held at City Hall, Centum City, Suyeong, and Gwangan Stations
to Achieve 50,000 Signatures for the National Petition
Busan Transportation Corporation (President Lee Byungjin) conducted a public awareness campaign on November 14 and 15 to achieve 50,000 signatures for the national petition calling for the legislation of national government compensation for free fare losses in urban rail transit.
This campaign was held in connection with the national petition, which began on October 27, urging the legislation of national government compensation for free fare losses in urban rail transit. The corporation informed citizens about the financial difficulties faced by urban rail operators due to free rides and emphasized the necessity of national funding support, actively encouraging participation in the petition.
On the morning of the 14th, the campaign targeted commuters at City Hall Station on Line 1, and in the afternoon, promotional activities continued at Centum City Station on Line 2, which saw a large influx of visitors for the 'G-Star International Game Exhibition.' On the 15th, the corporation encouraged citizen participation in the petition at Suyeong and Gwangan Stations on Line 2, near the area where the 'Busan Fireworks Festival' took place.
On-site, citizens expressed their support and empathy, saying, "I didn't realize that losses from free rides account for half of the urban rail deficit," and "Since everyone aged 65 and older receives this benefit, the government should also take some responsibility."
Busan Transportation Corporation is expanding petition participation through various promotional channels, including digital billboards inside stations, public service advertisement boards, and official social media accounts. The corporation also plans to continue on-site promotions at stations with high foot traffic, such as those near commercial districts, universities, and festival venues.
This national petition will continue until the 26th. If it receives more than 50,000 signatures, the National Assembly's standing committee will be required to discuss the legislation of national government compensation for free fare losses in urban rail transit.

Lee Byungjin, President of Busan Transportation Corporation, emphasized, "The free ride system is an important policy for intergenerational harmony and social solidarity. Your participation in the petition will be the first step toward achieving sustainable transportation welfare in this era of super-aging society." He added, "Free fare losses in urban rail transit are a structural problem that cannot be resolved by the efforts of individual organizations alone, so a legal basis for government-level support must be established."
