Gangneung City Plans Expansion by 2028
Gangneung City in Gangwon Province (Mayor Kim Hongkyu) plans to expand the Gangneung Municipal Nursing Home for the Homeless, located at 12-14 Jinjaegol-gil, to a three-story building by 2028.

View original imageThe Gangneung Municipal Nursing Home has been the only facility for the homeless in the Yeongdong region since it began operations in 1962. However, as the current building, constructed after 1995, has aged for more than 25 years, there have been calls for fundamental improvements due to deterioration and safety concerns.
In response, the city will invest a total project cost of 7 billion won to demolish two out of the four existing buildings and expand the facility to a three-story structure with a floor area of 1,350 square meters (408 pyeong) by 2028. The project will officially begin with construction planning services in 2026.
Through the new facility, the city aims to secure temporary protection rooms to strengthen its ability to provide emergency shelter and protect individuals in crisis situations.
Additionally, by expanding program rooms, counseling rooms, and living spaces, the city expects to improve welfare conditions, prevent the spread of infectious diseases, and enhance the overall quality of care for the homeless.
