Proving Outstanding R&D Achievements and Technological Competitiveness
Korea South-East Power Company (KOEN) has demonstrated its strengthened global technological competitiveness by winning consecutive awards for its new R&D technology products at the '2025 Germany International Trade Fair for Ideas, Inventions, and New Products' (hereafter referred to as iENA) and the '10th Bitgaram International Exposition of Electric Power Technology (BIXPO 2025)'.
According to KOEN on November 12, the company exhibited three inventions at iENA, held in Nuremberg, Germany from November 1 to 3, and won a total of four awards, including a Silver Prize and a Special Award from the International Federation of Inventors' Associations. Subsequently, at BIXPO 2025, which took place in Gwangju from November 5 to 7, KOEN exhibited one invention and received a Silver Prize.
Since the inauguration of CEO Kang Kiyoun in November last year, KOEN has reorganized its structure to launch the KOEN Research Institute and has been striving to strengthen global technological competitiveness in the power generation sector.
In response, KOEN has been focusing on strengthening its R&D capabilities to secure future technologies and respond to government policies, and this series of awards has officially proven its outstanding R&D achievements.
KOEN, which is driving a comprehensive AI transformation (AX) across all areas of its power plants, completed the KOEN-type digital twin for thermal power plants in 2024. To further enhance its technological competitiveness, KOEN expanded into the renewable energy sector by jointly developing the 'Smart Wind Farm Operation Digital Twin' technology with the domestic SME DXLabs.
The first entry submitted to iENA was the digital twin technology installed at the Yeongheung Wind Farm. This technology, which enables performance analysis of wind turbines, anomaly detection, and optimization of maintenance cycles, was recognized for its contribution and awarded the Silver Prize.
Additionally, the 'KOEN Digital Twin', a technology jointly developed with the domestic SME WEMB, collects and utilizes power plant data to build a digital virtual power plant and supports optimal decision-making through AI-based predictive diagnostics. This system was recognized for its originality, winning the Bronze Prize and the Special Award from the International Federation of Inventors' Associations.
Both of these technologies were showcased in an immersive exhibition space at the BIXPO 2025 New Technology Exhibition, encouraging active participation and engagement from visitors, and drawing high levels of interest and positive feedback throughout the event.
Furthermore, at iENA, KOEN presented the 'CTCS Sponge Ball Degassing and Moisture Control Device', jointly developed with the domestic SME Electrico, which manages the vacuum degassing and moisture content of sponge balls used to clean condenser tubes in power plants. This technology also received a Silver Prize.
In addition, at BIXPO 2025, KOEN exhibited the 'AI Patrol Robot for Coal Unloader Safety Management', which was awarded the Silver Prize. This technology combines the intelligent video analysis technology of PIOT with KOEN’s on-site safety management expertise, enabling 24-hour autonomous driving and AI-based analysis to detect potential safety hazards such as early detection of ship collisions.
Kang Kiyoun, CEO of KOEN, stated, "To grow into a globally competitive company in the rapidly changing global energy market, we will continue to focus on innovative R&D so that outstanding technologies can be commercialized." He added, "By strengthening full-cycle R&D management, we will continuously discover innovative and challenging ideas and expand a co-growth ecosystem with promising SMEs."
