Kim Seongryul Archive Exhibition by Kyungnam University Alumnus Held at Masan Indoor Gymnasium
Photos and Personal Collections on Display Until November 12
The "2025 Haksan Archive Exhibition," honoring "Haksan Kim Seongryul," the legendary wrestler of Masan, proud alumnus and professor of Kyungnam University, will be held at the special exhibition hall in front of Masan Indoor Gymnasium until November 12, 2025.
This exhibition has been organized to coincide with the 22nd Haksan Kim Seongryul National Ssireum Championship, which is taking place at the Masan Indoor Gymnasium during the same period. It is a special exhibition commemorating the life and achievements of Haksan Kim Seongryul, a legend of Korean Ssireum who dominated the sport in the 1960s and 1970s.
The exhibition is open daily from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., where visitors can view a variety of photographs and personal items related to Kim Seongryul. A caf? for visitors to meet and relax has also been set up right next door.
Born in 1948 in Masan, Gyeongnam, Kim Seongryul made a meteoric rise to the sand arena in the 1960s, achieving an unprecedented record in Korean Ssireum history: nine national championship titles, four consecutive KBS Cup victories (1972-1975), and eight consecutive Presidential Cup wins (1970-1977). He elevated Masan to the status of "Mecca of Ssireum" and remains a legendary figure in the sport.

After attending Masan Middle School and Masan Yongma High School, he graduated from Kyungnam University in 1972. Beginning in 1983, he served as a professor in the Department of Physical Education at the College of Education, producing numerous Ssireum stars such as Lee Seungsam, Lee Manki, and Mo Jaeuk. He passed away in 2004 at the age of 56. In the same year, the "Haksan Cup Ssireum Tournament," named after his pen name, was inaugurated and has been held annually ever since.
