US Housekeeper Fatally Shot After Mistakenly Visiting Wrong Home
Controversy Rekindled Over Indiana's "Stand Your Ground" Law
In Indiana, United States, a housekeeper was fatally shot by a homeowner after mistakenly arriving at the wrong address.
According to local media outlets such as ABC and NBC on November 8 (local time), Maria Florinda Rios Perez, a 32-year-old cleaning company employee from Guatemala, was shot and killed in front of a house in Whitestown, on the outskirts of Indianapolis, at around 7 a.m. on November 5.
Police responded to a report of a home intrusion and found Perez dead in her husband's arms at the front door. Her husband told local media, "They should have called the police before suddenly firing a gun," adding that a bullet suddenly burst through the front door without warning.
Local police determined that the couple, both cleaning company employees, had accidentally gone to the wrong house and were shot at the door. It was revealed that they did not enter the house.
Specific details, such as who was inside the house at the time and who fired the gun, have not been released. The police stated, "This is a complex, sensitive, and ongoing matter," and added, "Releasing information about the (perpetrator) would be both inappropriate and potentially dangerous." The police have officially submitted all case materials to the local prosecutor's office to determine whether charges will be filed.
The Boone County Prosecutor's Office, which has jurisdiction over the case, stated that the incident is extremely complicated due to Indiana's self-defense laws. Under Indiana's "Stand Your Ground Law," which is currently in effect, a person who is lawfully present at a location and feels threatened may use force, including deadly weapons, without any duty to retreat. Similar laws are in effect in over 30 other states in the United States.
This law has long been controversial because of concerns that it may justify excessive use of force in self-defense. There have been several similar incidents in the United States in the past.
