A New Model for Revitalizing the Local Economy and Downtown Commercial Districts
Taebaek City in Gangwon Province (Mayor Lee Sangho) announced on November 7 that it has officially designated the 'Taebaek Maru Autonomous Commercial Zone' in accordance with Article 15 of the 'Act on Mutual Growth and Revitalization of Local Commercial Districts' (commonly known as the Local Commercial District Act).

View original imageThe newly designated Taebaek Maru Autonomous Commercial Zone encompasses Samsu-dong Food Street, which stretches from Taebaek Station to Hwangji Pond, and includes a total of 261 stores.
This designation is being promoted in conjunction with the commercial district revitalization project, which is overseen by the Ministry of SMEs and Startups and has a total project budget of 6.2 billion won. It is expected to serve as an important foundation for the revitalization of the stagnant old downtown commercial district and the recovery of the local economy.
In particular, stores within the autonomous commercial zone will be eligible for special benefits as affiliated merchants of Onnuri gift certificates. In addition, a variety of customized revitalization projects will be implemented, including the creation of anchor spaces reflecting the unique characteristics of the commercial district, commercial district branding, and merchant capacity-building education.

An official from Taebaek City stated, "The Taebaek Maru Autonomous Commercial Zone is the first autonomous commercial model designated in Taebaek City and will be established as a mutually beneficial regional economic innovation platform with the participation of merchants, landlords, and local residents. We will ensure the smooth implementation of the commercial district revitalization project so that this area can be reborn as a vibrant street enjoyed by both citizens and tourists."
