Police Apprehend Five Suspects from Cambodian Romance Scam Organization
Successful Results Through Close Cooperation With Local Authorities
The National Police Agency announced on November 4 that it had apprehended five key suspects from a romance scam crime organization operating out of Bavet, Cambodia, through close cooperation with Vietnam.
The police have strengthened their response system by holding meetings with police attach?s and sending official requests for cooperation to each country under the authority of the Acting Commissioner General of the National Police Agency, in preparation for the possibility that some members of the Cambodian organization might flee to neighboring countries.
On October 21, the police attach? in Da Nang, Vietnam, received a missing person report for suspect A (in their 20s) and, while investigating their whereabouts, discovered that A was the subject of an Interpol Red Notice. The attach? also confirmed that suspect B (in their 20s), who entered Vietnam from Cambodia and stayed at a hotel in downtown Da Nang with A, was also under a Red Notice. On October 28, working together with the Da Nang Public Security Department, the police arrested A and B, and additionally apprehended suspect C (in their 20s), who was hiding in the same building.
In Ho Chi Minh City, the police attach? obtained intelligence that suspect D (in their 20s) had entered the country illegally and, in cooperation with the local public security department, arrested the individual. In Khanh Hoa Province, immigration authorities discovered that suspect E (in their 30s), who was being investigated for illegal entry without a passport, was also a member of the same scam organization.
This operation was the result of swift information sharing and an organic cooperation system between the National Police Agency, police attach?s stationed in Vietnam, and local public security authorities. It is regarded as a representative case where international cooperation against scam organizations, which have been spreading recently in Southeast Asia, has led to tangible results.
