Out of 30 projects across 20 cities and counties in the province, two projects have been completed so far. Among them, the Kyungmin University Street project is considered a model case of urban regeneration based on collaboration among the private sector, government, and academia, and is setting the direction for Gyeonggi Province’s urban regeneration policy.
Since June 2023, the city has actively promoted the urban regeneration project under the theme "From Conflict to Coexistence: Reviving University Street through Cooperation" for over two years. "Kyungmin University Plaza" and "Enter the Shopping Street" were established along 1111 Hoguk-ro, accompanied by various programs aimed at revitalizing the local commercial district and restoring the community.
The main initiatives include ▲ revitalizing alleyway businesses along University Street ▲ improving the shopping district’s landscape ▲ supporting youth startups and cultural activities ▲ and operating a resident council. In particular, by assigning the unique name "Kyungmin University Street," the city enhanced local recognition and held the "Alley Market" event 13 times, with active participation from both youth and residents.
At the "Youth Market," young entrepreneurs conducted experimental activities, and through the establishment of a resident council and a merchants’ association, the city fostered self-sufficiency and a sustainable management system for the commercial district. As these resident-led programs took root, the University Street area was reborn as a vibrant hub of everyday culture.
Notably, the city established a collaborative governance structure centered on the Urban Regeneration Support Center, involving the merchants’ association, universities, residents, and the local administration. This cooperative system, which enables residents to take the lead in every stage from planning and implementation to post-management, has been highly praised for enhancing the sustainability of urban regeneration.
In recognition of these efforts, the city received the Minister of the Interior and Safety Award in the governance building category at the "2025 Korea Urban and Regional Innovation Industry Expo."
