Hanwha Cultural Foundation Opens 'Space ZeroOne' in the US... A Launchpad for Emerging Artists to Enter the Global Stage
A Launchpad for Promising Korean Artists to Enter the Global Stage
On November 3, Hanwha Cultural Foundation announced that it will open a nonprofit exhibition space, Space ZeroOne, in Tribeca, the heart of New York's cultural and artistic scene. By expanding its long-standing cultural exchanges and support for artists to the center of New York, the foundation aims to establish a hub for global art exchange and a launchpad for emerging artists to enter the international stage. As the only exhibition space in New York directly operated by a cultural foundation under a Korean corporation, it is expected to serve as a global platform and networking hub for discovering and introducing contemporary Korean artists.
The inaugural exhibition at Space ZeroOne, titled "Contours of Zero," will open on November 7 and feature approximately 20 works by eight emerging Korean artists who explore the intersection of technology, materiality, and cultural identity. Participating artists include Baek Jeonggi, Yoo Jiyoung, and Ji Heekim, who are alumni of Hanwha Cultural Foundation's "Youngmin Overseas Residency Support" program, as well as Park Jeonghye, Seo Jinho, Song Minjeong, Oh Gayoung, and Hong Giha.
The exhibition draws inspiration from the meaning of the space's name, "ZeroOne." Here, "Zero" is interpreted not as nothingness, but as latent potential, while "One" represents the realization of that potential. The artists visualize various facets of Korean society through diverse media such as painting, sculpture, and installation, highlighting the intersection of technology and culture. On the opening day, an official ceremony will be held with participating artists and members of the New York art community in attendance.
On the mezzanine floor of the exhibition space, artist Hong Sunghye's "Mezzanine Lounge" project will also be unveiled. The lounge, furnished with the artist's geometric abstract objects, experiments with the concept of "art that can be used and inhabited." This project raises questions about the practical function and utility of art, further expanding the spatial identity of Space ZeroOne.
