Following last year's support for an abalone farming company, this marks the second time a smart tank has been provided. The delivery ceremony, held on the 23rd, was attended by a total of five people, including Hyun Daejin, CEO of Bohae English Cooperative Corporation, and Jin Jutae, Head of Compliance Support Division at Lotte Mart & Super.
Recently, the flatfish farming industry has been suffering greater losses due to rising water temperatures caused by the climate crisis. This year in Jeju, a record-long high-temperature warning lasted for 85 days, leading to mass deaths of farmed flatfish and increasing management burdens for fish farms. Jeju is the largest flatfish farming region in Korea, accounting for about half of the nation’s total production, which highlights the growing importance of managing the farming environment.
The tank provided this time is an advanced IoT-based facility that monitors key indicators such as water temperature and dissolved oxygen in real time and immediately notifies users of any abnormal signs through alerts. This enables rapid detection and response to environmental changes, and is expected to improve the mortality rate by 4.6 percentage points compared to existing systems. It can also contribute to building a sustainable aquaculture system by reducing the use of antibiotics.
Lotte Mart & Super plans to contribute to the stable supply and price stabilization of flatfish through long-term investment, while strengthening mutual growth with local fish farms. By securing high-quality seafood based on a stable farming environment, the company aims to create a virtuous cycle that provides consumers with fresh products at reasonable prices.
Jin Jutae, Head of Compliance Support Division at Lotte Mart & Super, stated, "As a major distributor responsible for the nation's food supply, supporting smart tanks is one of the practical measures to address climate crisis risks together with fish farms. We will continue to focus on the 'Badaae Jinsim' campaign and make ongoing efforts to promote sustainable fisheries and preserve the marine ecosystem."
