National Assembly Science Committee: "Gwangju Is the Key Pillar for Korea's Leap to Top 3 in AI"
Calls for Three Major Policies Including Establishment of National AI Research Institute in Gwangju
Jo Incheol: "Strong Government Commitment and Investment Needed"
Members of the National Assembly's Science, ICT, Broadcasting, and Communications Committee emphasized that "Gwangju, as an AI-centered city, must play a key role in Korea's leap to become one of the world's top three AI powers."
On October 23, Democratic Party of Korea and New Reform Party members of the committee issued a press release stating, "Although the recent decision regarding the private consortium for the 'National AI Computing Center' did not align with the expectations of Gwangju citizens, the committee reaffirms that advancing AI policies centered on Gwangju is an essential condition for national success."
They continued, "Since 2019, Gwangju has pursued an AI vision aimed at overcoming the risk of regional extinction and fostering future growth, successfully completing the first phase of the project (2020-2024) and laying a solid foundation. Therefore, the government must promptly implement three major policies to maximize Korea's AI capabilities and fulfill national policy objectives."
The three major policies are: ▲ Establishment of a (tentative name) National AI Research Institute in Gwangju to enhance global competitiveness; ▲ Securing independent technological capabilities through the creation of the 'Gwangju AI Demonstration Center'; ▲ Upgrading and expanding the existing 'National AI Data Center.'
The lawmakers stressed, "To develop and demonstrate fundamental AI technologies and break free from dependence on global technology, it is necessary to establish a strong, public-led R&D hub. In addition, the capacity and energy efficiency of the National AI Data Center, which is currently operating as part of Gwangju's first-phase AI project, should be proactively enhanced."

Jo Incheol, a Democratic Party of Korea lawmaker representing Gwangju Seo-gu Gap, stated, "As the world engages in fierce competition for AI supremacy, securing an early lead will determine future national competitiveness. To achieve the 'Top 3 in AI' goal, the government must demonstrate strong commitment and make bold investments. The National Assembly's Science, ICT, Broadcasting, and Communications Committee will also work together toward this goal."
