Ministry of Education Bans All University Travel, Training, and Volunteer Activities in Cambodia
The Ministry of Education has requested that all universities and colleges across the country strictly prohibit students and faculty from visiting Cambodia, following the recent death of a Korean university student in Cambodia.
On October 16, the Ministry of Education announced that it had sent an official letter containing these instructions to each university in order to prevent further incidents and strengthen safety management.
First, the Ministry of Education emphasized that students and faculty must check the latest safety information for their destination country through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ Overseas Safe Travel website or mobile app before traveling abroad, and strictly adhere to safety guidelines to prevent accidents. The ministry also called for all visits-including faculty training and student volunteer activities-to be restricted or prohibited in countries under travel advisories, including Cambodia.
The ministry also urged universities to strengthen preventive education and safety management at the institutional level.
The Ministry of Education asked university headquarters (such as student affairs, career support, and international exchange departments) and student councils to work together to alert students and provide preventive education, so that similar incidents do not occur, and to implement a variety of safety management measures independently at each university.
Choi Kyojin, Minister of Education, is scheduled to hold an emergency response meeting at the Government Complex Sejong on October 17 to share the situation regarding Cambodia with student affairs deans from universities and colleges, and to discuss preventive measures.
